Qwik Jon® Upflush systems are an ideal option for adding a bathroom to any space, including areas with no existing plumbing. With these units, installing a bathroom is quick and easy, with no need to break walls or flooring. Learn the different upflush toilet system parts and how they work.

What Are Upflush Toilet Systems?

Upflush toilet systems eliminate the need for plumbing or adding new pipes when installing a toilet. The system works similarly to standard toilets — waste goes into the bowl and gets flushed out using powerful water pressure. Instead of relying on gravity, the upflush toilet system works by discharging water to the back of the toilet and into a pump with a macerator. The macerator grinds the waste, which moves through a pipe leading to a sewage system or septic tank.

The Parts of an Upflush Toilet System

Upflush toilets feature different parts that work together to create an efficient and cost-effective alternative to getting rid of waste. Here are the main upflush system parts:

The Pump

The macerating or grinding pump is an essential component of an upflush toilet system. It’s a small unit situated on the floor at the back of the toilet. The electric-powered pump connects to the outlet toilet, pipework, and electrical supply. It features blades that grind solid waste and toilet paper. The grinding process usually takes a few seconds — then, the pump propels the particles into narrow pipes.

The Toilet

An upflush toilet is similar to a traditional toilet to the point where the two can be indistinguishable. In terms of appearance, the upflush toilet features a bowl, a standard toilet seat, and a handle for flushing. These types of toilets can also complement various kinds of decor, making a great addition to any space. The toilet works like any other standard toilet, where the bowl holds the content until it is flushed.

The Pipes

Upflush toilet systems have small-diameter discharge pipes connected to the macerating pumps. The pipes carry waste away from the bathroom after it has been liquified in the pump, sending it to the sewage system or septic tank.
