Sewage pumps are crucial for removing accumulated water and solid waste from your property. They feature several essential components and parts that facilitate efficient operation. Learn more about the anatomy of a sewage pump to better understand how it works.

What Is a Sewage Pump?

A sewage pump is a type of pump used to move wastewater and solid materials from one place to another. It is typically installed in the lowest point of the sewage pit and found in properties where the plumbing system is located below the sewer line.

Two types of sewage pumps are available — ejector and grinder models. Each of these pumps has slight variations in the way they operate to move wastewater.

The Parts of a Sewage Pump

The parts of a sewage pump vary depending on the unit. Some of the common parts across different types of sewage pumps include:

Float Switch

The float switch is a vital part of a sewage pump that controls its operation based on the level of wastewater present. When the water in the sump pit rises to a specific point, the float activates the pump, signaling it to start working. Conversely, the float switch deactivates the pump to prevent it from running dry when the water level decreases.

Motor

Pump motors are responsible for driving the whole pumping process. When activated by the float switch, the motor generates the necessary pressure to drive the impeller.

Impeller

The impeller is a rotating component of the sewage pump, designed with a rotor shape. As the pump motor turns the impeller, it creates centrifugal force that pushes the wastewater out through the pump and into the discharge pipe. This action draws more wastewater into the pump while allowing it to flow out of the sump pit continuously.

Discharge Pipe

The discharge pipe is an exit point in the sewage pump where wastewater is expelled. It is connected to the pump and leads the water away from the sump pit to the main sewer line.

Power Cord

Power cords connect the pump to an electrical power source. They are designed to be durable and fully waterproof to keep the sewage pump operating reliably.
